The purpose of this newsletter is to inform you of recent changes in transportation law in New York that will affect the trucking industry. I hope you find these newsletters informative and helpful. Please let me know of anything I can do to assist you.

NEW INTRASTATE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKING REQUIRMENTS!

If you operate a commercial motor vehicle that carries wholly within New York State with a gross vehicle rating of 18,001 lbs. or more, excluding those involved in commerce but not requiring operating authority by NYSDOT to transport property or household goods for compensation, AND you don't have a USDOT # that is displayed on both sides of your truck, you need to obtain one by July 5, 2005.

For business operating wholly within New York State, you have until July 5, 2006, to display your business name and USDOT # on both sides of your trucks (GVWR between 10,001 and 18,000 lbs.) Beginning July 5, 2006, this requirement also will apply to trucks with trailers that have a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) greater than 10,001 lbs.

The motor carrier identification number shall be the USDOT identification number issued to the motor carrier by NYSDOT, preceded by the letters "USDOT" and followed by the letters "NY."

The business name and marking must...

1)      appear on both sides of the self-propelled motor vehicle.

2)      be in letters that contrast sharply in color with the background on which the letters are placed.

3)      be readily legible, during daylight hours, from a distance of 50 feet while the motor vehicle is stationary.

Apply for a USDOT # online at www.usdotnumberregistration.com or call (866) 881-2630 to have the application faxed or mailed to you.

If you have any further questions about the new marking requirements, please call our office; we will be happy to assist you.
