Medical CertificateIf you operate a commercial vehicle, you may be required to obtain a DOT medical certificate. A medical certificate is issued by a doctor stating that you are physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. The medical certificate is normally good for two years; it may be issued for a shorter period of time if certain medical conditions exist. Any licensed medical examiner can perform the exam. Currently, it’s up to you to choose your doctor. To determine whether you need a medical certificate, view the NYSDOT's Online Guide, and answer the questions that follow. If you already have a medical certificate, remember that a copy must be turned in to the motor carrier, and you must always keep the certificate with you when operating a commercial motor vehicle. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 212-509-7700 or email us at Email Me.
