New York State Overweight/ Overlength Permits – Department of Transportation

The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law establishes limits as to the size and weight of vehicles allowed to travel over public highways. The New York State Department of Transportation requires that you apply for Special Hauling Permits and Divisible Load Overweight Permits for combination length and weight vehicles over a certain limit.

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT), as well as the New York State Thruway Authority and the New York State Bridge Authority, have each established procedures for permitting oversize and/or overweight vehicles across the highways which they own and operate in a manner to ensure public safety.

The NYS DMV also provides information on the NYS Bridge Formula and the Federal Bridge Formula on its Form MV-519, entitled "Information Concerning Oversize/Overweight Vehicles.
