Truck Routes

Truck operations are often restricted to specific truck routes in the five boroughs and violations for driving off-route can carry hefty fines and points to your license. The New York City Department of Transportation has a very useful site with transportation routes available for your use. The 2007 edition of the New York City Truck Route Map is available online, through the mail or by calling the New York City Call Center at 311 ((212) NEW-YORK from outside the City). These full color, double-sided maps feature the City’s comprehensive Truck Route Network overlaid on top of the entire arterial street network making it easier for drivers to locate specific streets and intersections. These maps also contain helpful information on truck route signage, weight limits and dimensions; overweightloverdimensional permitting and truck related violations as well as City, regional and state truck-related resources.

With nearly 1,000 miles of designated roadway, New York City has one of the most complex truck route systems in the nation. The New York City Truck Route Network is comprised of a series of roadway segments designated in Section 4-13 of the New York City Traffic Rules. These regulations establish the routing requirements for all truck trips made on New York City arterials. This network is comprised of two distinct classes of roadways, Local Truck Routes and Through Truck Routes. To learn more about rules and regulations governing the movement of trucks on City streets, as well as a complete listing of all truck routes, please refer to the NYC DOT page on truck routing.

Certain roadways within New York City have commercial vehicle restrictions. For the most part, commercial vehicles are prohibited from using the portion of the limited-arterial highway network, commonly referred to as the Parkway System. Refer to the NYC DOT for a list of excluded roadways.
